The ability to communicate in a foreign language is a key skill for citizens of the 21st century. By speaking a language other than English, we have an asset for life. We live in a multilingual, multicultural world in which we can live, work or study. It may seem that everyone speaks English, but in fact, 75% of the world’s population doesn’t.
Studying a language at GCSE gives students skills which are useful in everything they do. Learning a language helps memory, creativity, listening and self-confidence. These skills are transferable and relevant for jobs and Further Education. Employers and Universities give preference to students with a language.
In the Academy, French is the core subject in Year 7 and 8. In Years 9, 10 and 11, students will have a choice of French and/or Spanish GCSE. The Modern Foreign Languages Department is very well resourced with interactive whiteboards, a computer room, the ActiveExpression voting system and textbooks with matching online resources.
The Modern Foreign Languages Department subscribe to the Linguascope website and the Zut Languages website in order to provide a fun and interactive way to complete revision or extension activities and promote independent learning.
