Rationale

Photography at The John Wallis Church of England Academy encourages pupils to observe the world more carefully and communicate ideas through powerful visual imagery.

Pupils learn how composition, light, viewpoint, focus and timing can transform an image and influence the way it is understood. They explore both creative and technical approaches to photography, developing confidence with cameras, digital editing and image manipulation while learning to make increasingly intentional choices.

The subject also introduces pupils to the work of photographers and artists from different styles, cultures and periods. By analysing how others use photography to document, question, persuade or express, pupils begin to develop their own visual identity and personal approach.

Photography values experimentation and refinement. Pupils are encouraged to test ideas, take creative risks and improve their work through review and reflection. In doing so, they build independence, originality and a stronger understanding of how images shape the way we see the world.

Aims

Through Photography, pupils will:

• develop confidence in using cameras and photographic equipment

• understand how composition, lighting, focus and viewpoint affect an image

• experiment with a range of photographic techniques and processes

• use digital editing tools to refine and develop imagery

• research and respond to the work of photographers and artists

• generate and develop personal ideas through visual investigation

• make purposeful decisions about subject matter, style and presentation

• analyse and evaluate photographic work using appropriate terminology

• refine ideas in response to feedback and experimentation

• create increasingly accomplished and personal photographic outcomes

• develop creativity, independence and attention to detail

• understand the role of photography within art, media, communication and the wider creative industries.
