English Language

Rationale

English Language gives pupils the tools to understand, question and communicate with the world around them.

Through reading a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, pupils encounter different voices, viewpoints and experiences. They learn to look closely at how writers use language and structure to influence, persuade, entertain and inform, becoming increasingly confident in interpreting both what is said and how it is said.

Writing is equally important. Pupils are taught to shape language deliberately for different audiences and purposes, whether crafting imaginative writing, presenting an argument or expressing a viewpoint. Accuracy matters, but so too does having something worth saying. We want pupils to leave us able to communicate with clarity, confidence and individuality.

English Language is therefore more than an examination subject. Strong literacy gives pupils greater access to the curriculum, employment and wider society. It enables them to participate, challenge, persuade and make their own voices heard.

Aims

In English Language, pupils will:

• read increasingly demanding fiction and non-fiction with confidence and understanding

• identify explicit and implicit meanings within texts

• explore how writers use language, structure and form to shape meaning and influence readers

• compare different perspectives, attitudes and representations

• support interpretations with carefully selected evidence

• evaluate texts thoughtfully and develop independent responses

• write imaginatively with control, detail and a clear sense of purpose

• construct convincing arguments and communicate viewpoints effectively

• adapt vocabulary, tone and style for different audiences and contexts

• develop accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar

• broaden their vocabulary and use language with increasing precision

• speak clearly, listen carefully and contribute confidently to discussion

• recognise the importance of language in shaping ideas, relationships and society.
