Design and Technology
Rationale
Design and Technology at The John Wallis Church of England Academy is about turning ideas into purposeful, well-considered products.
Pupils are taught to look closely at problems, understand the needs of users and respond with creativity, technical knowledge and practical skill. They learn how to develop an idea from an initial concept through to a finished outcome, making informed choices about materials, construction, function and appearance along the way.
The subject gives pupils opportunities to experiment, prototype, refine and improve. It encourages them to be resourceful and precise, to learn from what does not work first time, and to appreciate the value of craftsmanship and thoughtful design.
Pupils also consider the wider impact of the products we create and use, including sustainability, innovation, cost and changing technologies. In doing so, they gain a deeper understanding of how design influences everyday life and the world around them.
Aims
Through Design and Technology, pupils will:
-
identify and respond to real design problems
-
develop original ideas for specific users and purposes
-
communicate concepts through sketches, modelling and technical drawing
-
gain confidence in using a range of tools, equipment and processes
-
select and use materials with increasing knowledge and accuracy
-
understand how products are constructed and manufactured
-
create functional, well-made and visually considered outcomes
-
test and refine ideas throughout the design process
-
evaluate products critically and use feedback to improve their work
-
consider sustainability, cost, function and user experience
-
explore the work of designers, engineers and manufacturers
-
develop independence, resilience, precision and creative thinking.
