Educational Visits and Opportunities
Sixth Form students are involved in a wide variety of programmes and events that take place throughout the academic year, examples of which can be seen below:
Two of our Year 12 students have been successful in gaining a place on the Stephenson Harwood Bright Sparks Programme. This involves one week’s work experience in an international law firm in London and offers an insight into a career not only in law, but also HR, IT, marketing and accounts.
Nine of our students have been accepted onto the Lloyds Banking Group virtual work experience programme on 12th and 13th July 2021. This event gives the opportunity to learn about some of the key aspects of the bank and for students to enhance their own personal and professional skills.
One of our Year 13 students applied for the Brakes “Jump Start into Product Supply” scheme and passed the initial interview. He is now looking forward to a placement induction day on 22nd June when he will gain a closer understanding of four apprenticeship roles available and then apply for a role with the potential to start in July 2021.
A Young Driver programme was delivered to all Sixth Form students in Tutor Time during May 2021 thanks to Kent County Council’s Road Safety Team. The course consisted of 4 virtual sessions and was designed to empower young drivers and young passengers to make safer choices.
The University of Reading offered its annual Reading Scholars experience to Year 12 students. This is a year long programme which gives students a taste of university life and an insight into studying one of fourteen subject strands at degree level. We have had a record sixteen students accepted onto the scheme and they have participated in initial online sessions and are still hoping to be able to go to a four-day residential summer school in July.
The Succeed Programme run by the University of Kent was offered to our students in November 2020. Seven students were successful in applying for a place on this programme which is designed to help young people explore the opportunities and challenges offered by higher education. Although the three-night residential at the university’s Canterbury campus may not go ahead, the scheme is nonetheless allowing students to find out about university life and to decide whether university is the right path for them.
In January 2021, during the second Lockdown, the sister of a John Wallis Academy student gave a talk to Year 12 students about applying to Oxbridge. As a current University of Cambridge PhD student, she focussed on what she did to get into Cambridge, the resources she used and the whole application process. Her talk was truly inspirational and was helpful for all students applying to top universities.
Our link with the University of Kent again provided support to our Year 13 students with a presentation about “Before you go to university” and students gained useful information about student finances, budgeting and finding a balance between academic demands and social activities. Student ambassadors from the university were on hand to answer questions and our September undergraduates found the session very useful.
Nuffield Research Placements 2021
All 6 of the Academy’s Year 12 Science students who applied have been awarded placements on this prestigious scheme:
Maya Al Howseh, Sophie Douglas, Ningwa Limbu, Enea Shehaj, Kieran Bracken and Matylda Wasilewska.
The Nuffield Research Placements are a National scheme which are funded by the Nuffield Foundation and delivered by STEM Learning. The placements are engaging, hands-on research projects for Year 12 students who have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards the work of a host organisation. They are a fantastic opportunity for students to apply skills and knowledge learned at school and work alongside researchers and industry professionals.
The placements range from developing a model of a joint support to designing a webportal for monitoring health data.
This scheme is one of the Foundation’s flagship programmes and has been running for 24 years. The Nuffield Foundation was established in 1943 by William Morris, Lord Nuffield, the founder of Morris Motors.
